Obedient Sons

When Swaim Hutson launched Obedient Sons in the year 2001, it certainly wasn’t the first time the North Carolina native was going against the advice of others. They say any artist has to know which rules to follow and which to break; Obedient Sons was not founded as an experiment but rather as an exploration, aspiring to represent the ambition of youth and the power of new ideas.

After four years of managing production for various leaders in menswear and merchandising for West Coast retailers, Hutson had gained the knowledge required to create a clothing line that offered reliable designs for men. Combining this knowledge with his personality and taste to create a new brand, Obedient Sons was launched and the collection quickly caught the attention of retail stores at both a domestic and international level.

San Francisco and Oakland were the launching pad for the label but by late 2003, Hutson had relocated to New York City. Obedient Sons has since gained important recognition within the fashion community, by winning awards such as “Styles Gen Art 2003”, “Gen Art Project 2003”, as well as having been nominated as a finalist for the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award in 2003 and 2005. At the same time, the brand has garnered a celebrity following, having been worn by many musicians including Green Day, Beck, Coldplay and Wilco and has been featured in magazines including I-D, Anthem, Black Book, Details, Rolling Stone, Nylon, Time Out, and many more.
